What is the Equinox and how you can align with the energy

September 22nd/23rd marks the Equinox…Spring Equinox for the Southern Hemisphere and Fall/Autumn Equinox for Northern Hemisphere.

The Equinox is known as a time of transition, contemplation and a fresh start. This is the time to let go of what we no longer want to bring with us and start a new cycle of growth. Equinoxes are a powerful energetic time that give us the opportunity to align with the cosmic flow and make significant changes in our lives.

Let’s get back to basics and answer… what is the Equinox?

The word ‘equinox’ mean ‘equal night’ in Latin. On an Equinox, the sun is in perfect alignment with the Equator, which means that the day and night are nearly the same length in time.

In the past, people believed that during Solstices and Equinoxes the veil between dimensions gets thinner and that it becomes easier to contact and communicate with spirits or other beings.

If that’s too spiritual for you, think of the Equinox from a practical perspective. Nature is cyclical and our bodies naturally adapt to the environmental changes around us. With these seasons now transitioning, no matter where in the globe you live, we are all experiencing an inner shift. An Equinox is a time of metamorphosis.

What does the September Equinox mean for us?

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn/Fall has arrived. From now on, days get shorter and temperatures drop. It’s a time to prepare for winter; physically by staying indoors and hibernating at home and mentally through introspection and reflection.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the Vernal or Spring Equinox is occurring. This is a completely different energy - mother nature is starting to wake up. Days are longer and warmer, and we’re beginning to get more light in our days. We naturally start to feel more physically energetic and mentally we can start initiating and taking action on the things we’ve been putting off throughout winter.

The Equinox no matter your hemisphere, symbolises a fresh start. It’s the perfect time to cleanse and shed anything we don’t want to continue - physically, emotionally and spiritually - before heading into this new phase.

Ways you can tap into the energy of the equinox energy

If you’re in Fall/Autumn…

Grounding practice:

It can be easy for us to become disconnected from our own intuition and energy. Grounding is a practice that can help promote better habits and stop us from falling into old patterns. It can enhance our mental and emotional clarity and reduce stress.

Grounding is a physical therapeutic technique that involves doing activities that “ground” or electrically reconnect you to the earth. You can practice grounding through walking barefoot on the earth, lying on the ground or submerging yourself in a natural body of water.

If you are unable to go outside, practice grounding through meditation.

If you’re in Spring…

A cleansing bath:

This cleansing bath ritual will purify your body through on of your biggest organs - the skin. It's time to wash away any stagnant energy and welcome in the new.

What you need:

  • bath (or a bucket if for a foot bath)

  • epsom salts

  • baking soda

  • your favourite essential oils

Sit in the bath (or foot bath) and listen to a cleansing meditation.
